More social search from Sproose
This week, Sproose will launch apps for Facebook and Twitter that will let you benefit from the collective knowledge of your network of friends. The Sproose home page will be re-designed too.
What is Sproose?
Sproose is a user powered search engine that allows you to contribute to the ranking of web pages by voting for pages you find useful. Sproose also lets you browse pages that have been voted for by other users. This way you can discover new and interesting pages in a social network environment.
Sproose is not an entirely human powered search engine, trying to build an entire index by the contributions of users. Rather, it offers human improved search results. We asked Bob Pack, CEO at Sproose, how this works: “Sproose licenses the search results from Yahoo, MSN and Ask then de-duplicates them to bring about a quality index. Sproose also spiders the web with it’s own crawler technology, using the open source crawler ‘Nutch” adding these results as well.”
Then what is the role of the users? Pack explicate: “We allow the users to vote up their favorites, improving the ranking. For example, on Google, a search for music lists Yahoo as the top search result because it has the most in-bound links. On Sproose, Pandora is number one in the results because our users have voted it number one.”
New on Spoose
On July 3rd, Sproose will launch a “question and answer” search-app for Facebook and Twitter, called AnswerMe. This application will be available for users of Facebook and Twitter.
Bob Pack describes the new app like this: “We think social networking will play an important role in search. That’s why we developed the AnswerMe app. When a user types in a search query into Sproose, they can also send that query out to some or all the contacts in their address book all at once, with just one click of a button next to the Sproose search box.”
The Sproose home page will have a complete re-design incorporating several new features and widgets Sproose is offering. It will also launch on July 3rd along with the new AnswerMe app.
The new start page will have three tabs with lists of popular searches for quick navigation. The three categories are current topics, hot products and favorites. We have seen a sneak preview and it looks like the social character of Sproose will become even more prominent.
